In partnership with client McWHINNEY, JOHNSON NATHAN STROHE recently celebrated the opening of the Cycle Apartments in Fort Collins. The team completed the architecture and interior design of the three- and four-story walk up apartments, which consist of 20 buildings on 10.2 acres.
The 405-unit apartment community makes physical activity a priority with amenities including a bike repair shop, 24/7 fitness facility, golf simulator and easy access to regional biking trails in the area. The community is also within walking distance to popular destinations, including the Foothills Mall and Colorado State University.
To inspire social interaction, JOHNSON NATHAN STROHE designed multiple common spaces, including an outdoor lounge space and grill area, a media and gaming area with TV, billiards and ping pong, a resort-style pool, and a spa and sun deck.
Maintaining a distinct pedestrian-oriented design, JOHNSON NATHAN STROHE created a breezeway with metal lattice features, which act as both a visual cue for breezeway entry as well as fall protection for the stair landing above. The metal lattice visually separates the adjacent building materials, allowing the contrasting material and color to act as a large wayfinding landmark. Tuck-under garages are oriented to mirror the adjacent building’s layout, creating a courtyard at the center of each series of buildings.
And it seems appropriate that the Cycle Apartments found a home in Fort Collins. Fort Collins is recognized as the ‘best bicycle city in the U.S.,’ with plenty of bike lanes and amenities that improve ridership and safety. The opening of JOHNSON NATHAN STROHE’s Cycle Apartments acknowledges and appreciates this local biking culture, aiming to bring it inside the home of the avid biker.
