The Mercantile Hotel, a Residence Inn by Marriott, is located in Missoula, MT. The project site has a storied past, having been home to the historic Missoula Mercantile. What started as a small log cabin trading post, became one of the biggest marketplaces in the western United States. The current building includes a historic renovation of the pharmacy building with major addition for an extended-stay hotel with 175 rooms. After having sat vacant for over 7 years, the historic redevelopment in the heart of downtown preserves and utilizes portions of the Mercantile structure, embedding the hotel in its greater context: a pedestrian-friendly, urban neighborhood at the confluence of the Big Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers.

The hotel design incorporates original elements of the Mercantile building into the interior design, bridging historic charm with contemporary functionality. Preserving and utilizing portions of a historic structure to embed the hotel in it’s greater context is a focus, as well as creating pedestrian-friendly retail and restaurant venues to enliven the surrounding urban neighborhood. Bridging Missoula’s past and present, the design seamlessly incorporates both historic and contemporary design elements. In addition to preserving and utilizing the historic pharmacy building on the site, the hotel embraces its surroundings through the intricate brick details, which reflect the historic buildings of the area. JNS carefully incorporated salvaged components of the original building into the new design, including weathered brick, textured fabrics and natural finishes.
